Happy Friday!
It’s Labor Day Weekend! I hope everyone had a good week. I was busy at my job – the last week of the month tends to get pretty busy for me – but we made it to the long weekend.
First and foremost, I missed the Monday blog. I don’t have a good excuse – the weekend got away from me and I wasn’t able to meet my writing goal. Still, the right thing to do would have been to write a blog about just that.
So, while that is not exactly great news, the good news is that we are officially back on track. This week I managed to get the chapter I wanted to write this weekend (Chapter 4) and the chapter I wanted to write this week (Chapter 5) done. I’m still beating myself up over the unproductive weekend but I’m happy to have put in a little extra effort and caught back up.
So, the actual experience of writing these chapters went really well. I’m second guessing a couple of plot points, and I wouldn’t be surprised if I ended up adjusting them, but I’m saving all of that until the next draft. My main goal is to just keep churning out the story as a whole and getting the whole first draft on paper.
Fortunately the writing itself seems to be coming a bit quicker. When I feel like I’m done writing for the day – usually at the end of whatever scene I’m working on – I’m happy to see that my word count is creeping higher and higher. I’m hoping this is a sign that after these first few weeks I’m getting just a little bit better at writing.
When I say ‘better at writing’ I don’t necessarily mean the quality of the prose – I mean finding the words I need in order to get the story onto the page. Obviously I don’t think I’m anywhere near an expert on prose, but knowing that I’m at least improving in this one aspect gives me hope.
Total word count is now at 13,000 words! I’m excited to see how many we have by the end of the weekend.
Goal For The Weekend
Write the next chapter, of course! This next chapter will prove a little difficult – the setting is changing and new characters are being introduced. So long as I can get it done in a rough draft worthy fashion, I’ll be happy.
I hope everyone enjoys the long weekend!
