Writing My First Book: Part Five – Excitement Builds

Happy Friday!
This week I got to write a chapter that I have been waiting for: Chapter Three. And that means we were also successful in this week’s goal – getting this chapter done. Lucky for me it was as much fun to write as I had hoped.
While the first two chapters introduced some important characters and helped to characterize Veryn, this chapter had a lot more excitement. By excitement I mean two things: One, some serious plot development, and two, some action. It’s the longest of the three rough draft chapters yet (A little over 3,000 words) and the words came easier than they did in some of the opening scenes. The chapter also ends on a cliffhanger – I don’t think many readers (if the book ends up with any) will be able to put it down without going straight into Chapter Four.
I think Chapter Four will also flow fairly easily onto the page. I don’t mean it will be a breeze, writing is definitely difficult, but because it connects so strongly to Chapter Three I suspect the story will write itself.
My greatest concern about what I’ve written so far is Veryn. I feel like I know him decently well in my own head so I’m worried I’m not doing a good enough job of explaining him on the page. I think getting outside opinions will help with this, but I’ve seen advice that says not to get any peer reviews/opinions until the first draft is done.
Goals For The Weekend
Chapter Four! Can’t wait to write it. I also need to get better with the artwork, which is something I failed to make time for this week. So I’m going to add a secondary goal of uploading some sort of doodle on Monday. It feels good to be doing something creative, even if I’m not particularly skilled at writing or drawing yet. Long way to go.

I also picked up a book I plan to read called ‘Elements of Style’ that will hopefully help my writing flow better.

Enjoy the weekend!
