Writing My First Book: Part 4 – Plot Development

It’s Monday!
Over the weekend I set one goal: Write Rough Draft Chapter Two. Good news: I did it! Less good news: I barely did it.
It wasn’t the writing that was the issue so much as the time management. I went camping Saturday night and had a family birthday on Sunday. Both were great, it just meant I had to write around these events as opposed to blocking out a chunk of time. So I wrote a little Saturday morning before camping, Sunday morning before the party, and Sunday evening once we got home.
I’m definitely happy to have got it done, but hopefully I can it do it in more consistent patterns in the future. All in all the chapter totaled 2,200 words. Not bad by my made up standards!
One thing I noticed is that the chapter got easier to write as it developed. Once the ‘scene’ was set up, I got to kind of just let the story unfold. I think that the same may be true for the overall book – I have these big plot points and scenes in my mind, I just need to get the characters, magic system, and setting introduced so that we can really flow into them.
Motivation
I will say, I have found this blog to be a great method of self motivation. It gives me an extra kick to get things done because I went on here and announced that I was going to. The thought of failing (even if it’s a deadline I made up for an audience that may or not be there) sure does pack a punch.
I also get motivation from telling myself that even if this book doesn’t turn out great, it’s absolutely going to make me a better writer. If I just keep writing with the intention of writing well and improving, eventually I’ll come up with something half decent!
Also, I’m giving life to my own little daydream. I think it’s a cool concept. Now I get to make it real.
Goals For This Week
The big goal for this week: Write Chapter Three. I am super excited for this chapter – things are really going to start to take off. I get to introduce an extremely important character. Well, a few of them, but one is more exciting to me than the others.
My other goal is keep drawing on Sketchbook Pro. Man is that an impressive skillset. My admiration grows for digital artists whenever I open the app. Hopefully I can follow some more tutorials along well enough to post something else.

I hope everyone has a great week!
